Jen Johnson-Ross here. Growing up on the family farm off of Swan Lake north of Superior, I spent my childhood daydreaming, running free and working hard.

Following graduation from the University of Iowa and acceptance into the C.U.T.E. (Cooperative Teacher Education Program), I left the Tall Corn State for Kansas City and taught high school history, middle school social studies, ESL (English as a Second Language) and G.E.D. classes. Helping people and paying-it-forward has always been my mantra!

My love of animals led to volunteering at a KC Area animal shelter, which then led to a change in career paths and I became the Executive Director of Animal Haven in Merriam, KS. Finding those stray, neglected and abused animals a new lease on life allowed me to utilize social media and websites to place them into the loving homes they so deserved from the start. Social media also attracted new donors, volunteers and helped to educate the community to the plight of homeless animals.

Love, yes love, brought be back to Iowa and I married my Farm Boy, Alan. We are the proud parents of three fantastic farm kids, three dogs and more cats than we can count. I volunteer with People for Pets in Spencer, the Emmet County Animal Shelter in Estherville, have served on the Dickinson County Extension Council, am the 4H dog obedience instructor and volunteer with Iowa Voters for Companion Animals. Yeah, I really, really, really like animals!

Working at the Iowa Great Lakes Area Chamber of Commerce since 2008, I dedicated myself to celebrating the small businesses and organizations that make our community unique and creating/organizing events that drove traffic to those businesses both during and following “tourist season”. The University of Okoboji Winter Games, Iowa Great Lakes Area Walleye Weekend, Fall Fest Children’s Carnival & the Boji Bike Rally were my other “babies” until April 2016, and that includes the social media, interviews, press releases, volunteer management & website maintenance it took to make those events an enormous success!
